If Wagmans is so concerned why do they leave the products on shelf?

Read this article today about how the grocery store Wagmans was putting their name on vending machines ins schools and selling their healthy items because they wanted to help with the problem of kids not eating right at school. Well that's funny those same products that the school bans from the vending machine are still sold on the stores shelves. Why? If they believe that the products are bad for you then should they not take them off the store shelves?

If the grocery store was really concerned and it was really about making a difference then I challenge them to remove all the products that are banned from the vending machines in schools from their shelves in all the stores. My problem with these advertising opportunity's that the so called healthy minded stores take advantage of every time they can, is that they will not take the products off the shelves of their stores also. Why?

Is the government money worth the loss and are the new regulations set by the US Department Of Agriculture really working?
The schools are told if you do not follow our guidelines you can not get the reimbursements for the free and reduced lunches. I for one do not believe the problem is at the school and who has time to drink 4 soda's and eat a bag or two of chips during school? During school you get a lunch break and even then you might have time for one drink and a candy bar. The new regulations on school vending machines are not the answer to the problem it is at home where the choices of meals is going to make a difference. Why is it ok for the government to say no more so called bad foods in school but we will still let all the food stamp recipients continue to use the food stamps to buy those same so called bad foods with tax dollars? Even the department that's sets the rules has said in a written report that there is no way to determine what is or what is not bad for you (WHAT?) So if the report says there is no clear standard for defining foods as good or bad or healthy or not how did they determine what was good for the school vending machine?
School vending machines are a way for the Nutrition department to take revenue out of the local schools hands but what they failed to see is no one is eating the items they suggest they put in, so they will remove the machines from the school and then the kids will simply go home and gorge on it there. We have a local conveyance store about 3 blocks from our high school and the kids simple stop in there and buy their morning drinks and candy before getting to school.

The revenue from the vending sales has just been shifted to the local store and away from the school that all and that is not the answer. I believe before the government goes around stating how bad the vending machines are for the kids they need to look at what they allow to be sold with tax payer dollars 1st.

Vending operators need to secure the outside vending machines with vending machine security cages.  With a security cage it will at least deter the vandal from breaking into the machine and many times help prevent damage to your machines. With vending machine break ins on the rise it is important for the vending operator to provide better security such as cameras and vending cages to help slow down and stop vending machine vandalism.

Are you rolling the dice on food items in Micro Markets?

With Micro Markets and fresh food items on the menu and more accessible than ever are you the operator taking a chance by selling food from coolers with no health safety?

Many operators are using the coolers provided by the bottlers to display and keep their Micro Market fresh foods in but the problem with this is that many of those coolers are designed for drink products and not food. Operators of Micro Markets need to be aware that when fresh or frozen food is being offered that you need to only use a cooler with a health safety feature build in so as not to run the risk of someone getting a food item that has been subjected to higher temperatures then would be needed to maintain a safe serving environment for such a product.

Getting coolers from the bottlers to use their products in the market is one option to keep equipment cost to a minimum but they should only be used for the drink products and even then Milk or any other drink product that is subject to temperature serving needs should only being offered from a cooler with a health safety lock out feature.

The health safety feature of the cooler is designed to lock the door of the cooler should the temperature inside the cooler where the food is held raises above a set temperature. Let’s say the power goes out over night at the location where the food is and the cooler warms up above ow let’s say 47 degrees,
and worst yet it is over the weekend because a storm or power outage. Now let’s say that before the place of the market opens power comes back on but the food inside the cooler had reached a temperature in excess of what it should have been and is now not fit to serve, but no one would know it because the cooler and product may cool back down below 40 degrees when the power came back on.
Not a situation you want to be liable for is it?

Solution is only use a reach in cooler with a health safety feature for any product that has to be keep a certain cold point or could be dangerous to eat or drink if not.

Getting Gym Back In The Program

I believe that if the school system really wants to help stop the overweight problem in the kids they need to get them back into gym as a workout and exercise class and not a social hour.
The gym class today is not about exercise it is more about social hour and it needs to be a time when activities include exercise and fitness.. Also health class should be focused more on teaching good eating habits to educate the kids on the subject.
Eating right starts at home and if you do not have parent involvement at the home level to teach kids and provide to the kids a healthy life style, well the vending machine at school is not going to make any difference.

Is it just the fact that it is water being sold or is it the fact that it is in a plastic bottle? It looks like the ban is just because it is water and that is absurd If people want to choose to drink water and other flavor waters or different brands of water because they like one taste over tap water they should have the right to buy those and drink them where they want..
